Minimalism - the elimination of unnecessary elements in the design - is one of the most popular design styles right now. This is probably because it's easy on the eyes and aesthetically pleasing. It also has a lot of practical benefits - reduced eyestrains, improved productivity, and an overall simple, streamlined look and feel. As a result, minimalist design is all the rage in corporate branding, product packaging, website design, and everywhere else. However, as with any design trend, there will be those who oppose it for reasons like; they don't understand its simplicity or think that minimalism lacks individuality or creativity.

Understandably so, especially since we've become so accustomed to busier designs over time. But let us tell you why you should consider adopting a minimalist style if you haven't already.

By definition, minimalist design is a style characterized by extreme simplicity. Perhaps it's no surprise that minimalists often produce work that is stripped down to its bare essentials - but nothing more and yet personalized, contemporary, elegant and effective. Although some claim that being too simple can come off as boring or uninspiring, others argue that simplifying actually helps bring out ideas in greater ways than traditional design elements ever could. Whatever side you're on in that debate, we can all agree that minimalism is about giving your content room to breathe so that your message comes across loud and clear without any unnecessary extras getting in between. There are hundreds of different ways one could define minimalist, but here are a few common characteristics many graphic designers follow when creating pieces using the minimalist design style.

1) Proper Use of Negative Space

A cornerstone principle of minimalism, negative space is an area around and between elements in a design that isn't occupied by visual content. This negative space allows for content to breathe, which creates a more effective and pleasing end result.

2) Minimal Color Palette

Due to its simplistic nature, minimalist graphic design rarely uses more than three colors or shades. Although there are some exceptions, utilizing multiple colors or shades can over-complicate a design and make it harder for your audience to digest the information being conveyed.

3) Limited Design Elements

When designing with minimalism in mind, there is no need to include excess amounts of typefaces or images as these can also distract from your message as well as put unnecessary strain on your audience's eyes from having to take everything in at once.

4) Focus On Subject

The main point of minimalist graphic design is to showcase what's most important, so try focusing on only one subject per page. As a general rule, simple ideas tend to be stronger than complex ones. So instead of trying to cram in multiple ideas into your design, narrow it down and let your audience focus on one key idea at a time. Another way you can help bring simplicity into your designs is by using a grid or guideline system that breaks down information visually for easy digestion.

5) Large Text / Image Proportions

The smaller text/image ratios often used in traditional designs are no match for minimalist approaches. With a focus on clarity and subject matter, it's important to have large, easy-to-read text as well as images that take up a substantial amount of real estate within your design.

Although one may argue that these essentials are subjective, some of us can appreciate minimalism more than others. Indeed, we all have different taste buds when it comes to art and design! Keep in mind we're not referring to going sparse here. Rather, a key element of minimalist design is to let your artwork speak for itself with as little distraction as possible. Minimalist designers look for ways to break apart an idea into its most basic form without adding anything unnecessary, which can serve as clutter or confusion. With that being said, don't be afraid to get creative and create a work of art that speaks to you - just be sure not to over-complicate things. Create something you think will stand out among other pieces while effectively conveying information to your audience - that's all there is to it!
